We have recently been reading an article about worms in the launch issue of this New Zealand sustainable living magazine called Good.
We have a compost bin, but a worm farm has been something we have been meaning to set up ever since we started using these biodegradable nappies. 'Good' magazine suggested a simple design using old tires and a sheet of iron, but it didn't have an outlet for the 'worm juice' which is liquid gold for your garden. So I asked around and we hooked up with two local people who had their own little worm farms.

Then this afternoon we visited Christine's parents who not only had an impressive worm farm, but also had a beautiful garden. We came home with two punnets of 'Tiger Worms' and lots of lovely photogtaphs of the children playing in their wonderful garden.
But back to the worms, Ian had this great idea. We purchased two Council issued recycling bins and placed one inside the other. The top one we plugged up the large drainage hole and drilled a dozen small holes in the bottom of the bin (small enough so the worms can't escape).
For the outer bin we purchased a simple tap from a home brewing shop. The worm juice will drip out of the first bin into the 2nd bin and when there is enough juice to collect we can just turn the tap on and let it drain into our watering can.
We filled the first bin up with some grass clippings, kitchen scraps, torn up egg cartons, a layer of cardboard and of course our worms!
The final product for under $35.00
