A couple of weeks a go I picked up a handmade bonnet from the thrift shop. I wasn't particularly in love with it, the fabric was a pastel purple and the the brim was highly decorated in a tacky frilly purple lace which reminded me of my Grandmother's bathroom! When Sadie tried it on it was a total frou frou overload!
But I could see with a bit of tweaking it could be quite pretty. So I pulled it apart and made my own version using some old pattern paper. The first one I made was too small for Sadie. It fitted Oscar perfectly, but it's a bit too pretty for my boy but he is a gracious model. As a result the rim was still too frilly and Oscar looked like a frilled neck lizard!
Next attempt I made the head piece bigger, the rim smaller and omitted the ribbon and lace all together. I used a beautiful piece of vintage fabric in peach with little blue roses from my fabric stash and lined the rim with some natural linen witch gave it some shape.
Coincidently the very same day I found this beautiful handmade peach linen dress from the thrift store for $1.50 which matched perfectly.
Sadie, picking flowers, handmade bonnet and dress ~ a match made in heaven!
LOVE LOVE LOVE. You should make some more and sell them.....to me!!! :)

VERY cute. I would've looked at the first one and not have gotten over all those frills. Glad you had the vision to make it so cute.

Awww, Oscar is much better looking than one of those funny little lizards! Once again you are making me pine after a little girl, I'm not sure my boys could quite pull off the frilly bonnet as well as Sadie. You are very clever. x

Sunny reetings from pre-wintry Sweden, were the hoar frost covers the fields (that is why I enjoy the summery warmth in this post ;-)

you did a great job creating your own bonnet. Love the end result and I agree with the poster above who said Oscar looks better than the lizard....actually looking at Miss Sdaie modelling her peachy bonnet, it makes me want one...it is kinda taking me back to my play days where we would pretend to be the Laura and Mary from Little House on the Praire. No one wanted to be Nellie Olsen lol
