Leaf bowls

We love air drying clay, it's so much fun.  In the past we've made dinosaur fossils, necklaces and Christmas decorations.

With lots of autumn leaves we thought we would try making little bowls for little treasures.

We collected various leaves from the garden and made imprints in the clay.

 

We then trimmed the excess clay off with a butter knife.

 

Then we placed the leaves into a bowl lined with plastic wrap and joined the pieces in the middle by gently pressing down the clay. 

We then left them for a week to dry before painting with acrylic paint.

Claytown Greytown

Over the summer Charlie and Sadie participated in a community project called Claytown Greytown.  The aim was to make a miniature version of the town Main Street out of clay.  The project was run by our Village Art Shop with the help of local artists, Sam, Maggie and Janie.

 

Sadie and Charlie wanted to do our café Cuckoo,

 

On day two they sculptured people, animals and characters.

 

Day three, they painted their creations.

 

They then were displayed in the Village Town Centre as part of the Greytown Arts Festival.

 

 

 

Now that the arts festival is over they are currently displayed at the Village Art Shop until it's decided what to do with them next.......

 

The best teachers

Hugo has started drawing and identifying objects he's drawn.  If it's a train he says 'toot toot' or a fish he will make fish sounds.

The flower press

I picked up a flower press from the op-shop last week and Sadie has been enjoying pressing garden and wild flowers. 

She's  a little impatient and can't wait long enough before she uses them, but her and Oscar have been making little flower fairies from the pressed flowers.  They are super cute.

Shadow theatre

Inspired from this website, Sadie made her own shadow theatre from a box and a pillowcase. 

She used shadow puppets purchased from Felt last Christmas, but is keen to make some of her own.

The parchment paper we had wasn't wide enough,

so I sacrificed a white pillowcase which worked brilliantly and will be more durable.

We watched performances all morning involving a princess, a castle and dinosaurs.

A friend painted some beautiful Autumn leaves in watercolors which inspired the children to do the same.

Cardboard family

 

Last week Oscar came home from creche with a cardboard doll of himself..... we spent the rest of the weekend making the rest of family.  We also have a cardboard house, car and trampoline.

We have the most wonderful art shop in Greytown ~ The Village Art Shop. I bought Sadie art supplies for Xmas and the next day I found out I had won their Facebook competition.

I haven't had nice art supplies for a very long time, so it's been lovely to be able to draw together.

She can teach me some things.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kids Market & Craft Sale

One of our local mums posted on Facebook recently that her son wanted to make things and sell them at the end of their drive.  How many of us did that as kids?  I remember trying to sell my toys and bunches of flowers when I was about seven years old. We lived down a country road and was bitterly disappointed when nobody came by.

Anyway, she came up with a great idea.  For those keen, how about we get together at the park and have a little craft market for the children.  The criteria was, the child had to make it themselves, sell it themselves and nothing would cost over a $1.

My children were super keen and we decided on 'stick men' because the sticks were free, we have lots of scrap fabric and all we had to buy was a packet of goggle eyes.  We also had some air drying clay in the cupboard and Charlie decided he would like to make some fossils and I suggested to Sadie she could make some pendents.

With the air drying clay, Charlie made small discs of clay and pressed plastic dinosaurs into it.  Some he pressed footprints and others bits of shell and rock.  They looked great.  He made a handful of pendants too and strung them up with some thick cotton.

Sadie rolled her clay out quite thinly and collected bits of fern, flowers and branches from the garden.  The impressions they made were lovely.  Once dry she painted a thin layer of white acyclic paint over them and also strung them up with a thick cotton.  They looked beautiful.

We then went to our favourite wooded area to collect sticks for our stick men.  We tried to find a variety of sticks of different shape and colour.

Stick men are loads of fun to make.  With a glue gun, ribbons, fabric scraps , feathers, pipe cleaners and  google eyes, Sadie and Oscar made some wonderful characters.  

Ready for the market.  It was a beautiful morning and all the children set up their stalls.  There were home baked goodies, paintings on small canvases, binoculars made from cardboard rolls, balloon faces, notebooks , homemade lemonade and more.  They all took it very seriously and were very proud of themselves.

Charlie sold all his dinosaur fossils for 20c each and sold them all. 

Sadie sold her beautiful pendants for a $1 and her stick men for 50c or three for $1.  They were very popular.

An amazing morning and we are now planning another one before Christmas.
